Preacher, Know When To Stop
Pastors, make sure Spurgeon is not talking about you:
“I heard one say the other day that a certain preacher had no more gifts for the ministry than an oyster, and in my own judgment this was a slander on the oyster, for that worthy bivalve shows great discretion in his openings, and knows when to close.”
Never Be Discouraged When You Are Opposed
Servants of Jesus Christ, never be discouraged when you are opposed, but when things run counter to your wishes, expect that the Lord has provided some better thing for you! He is driving you away from shallow waters and bringing you into deeper seas where your nets shall bring you larger draughts. Paul and Silas must go to prison because a chosen person (the jailer) was to be converted in the prison who could not otherwise be reached!
Concentrated Prayers
I have now concentrated all my prayers into one, and that one prayer is this, that I may die to self, and live wholly to Him.
Pastor, Do You Preach Christ?
We preach Christ and Him crucified. No Christ in your sermon, sir? Then go home, never preach again until you have something worth preaching.
“I Know How To Be Abased and How To Abound”
Now, remember, you will never know the fullness of Christ until you know the emptiness of everything else but Christ.
Liquid Prayers
Let us learn to think of tears as liquid prayers, and of weeping as a constant dropping of importunate intercession which will wear its way right surely into the very heart of mercy, despite the stony difficulties which obstruct the way.
Charles H. Spurgeon, The Treasury of David, notes on Psalm 6.8
