Christ Is a Strong Savior

Let us think we when we are troubled with our sins that Christ has this in charge from his Father, but he still not ‘quench the smoking flax’ until he has subdued all. This puts a shield in our hands to beat back ‘all the fiery darts of the wicked’ (Eph. 6.16). Satan will object, ‘You are a great sinner.’ We may answer, ‘Christ is a strong Savior.’ But he will object, ‘You have no faith no love.’ ‘Yes, a spark of faith and love.’ ‘But Christ will not regard that.’ ‘Yes, he will not quench the smoking flax.’ ‘But this is so little and weak that it will vanish and come to nought.’ ‘Nay, but Christ will cherish it, until he has brought judgment to victory.’ And this much we have already for our comfort, that, even when we first believed, we overcame God himself, as it were, by believing the pardon of all our sins, notwithstanding the guilt of our own conscience and his absolute justice. Now, having been prevailers with God, what shall stand against us if we can learn to make use of our faith?

The Effects of Grace

Grace does not merely aid righteous conduct; it also aids in the apprehension of the never-diminishing and nondeterred love of God that makes human righteousness possible. If obedience were merely a defensive posture that [Christians] assume to avert divine wrath or to curry divine favor, then human holiness would be but a euphemism for selfishness. When self-protection and self-promotion become the primary motivations of Christian obedience or preaching, then we have inadvertently made self-satisfaction the Lord of our faith.

What Is Truth Faith?

We must understand what true faith is. It is not mere belief; it is belief plus a total commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ…. Salvation is not a cheap insurance policy to keep you from the flames of hell; salvation is a new creation. This means new life, new love, new desires, a new direction of will, a new center for living, recognizing the sovereignty of God in even the littlest events in life. Faith is the total commitment of the life to the Lord Jesus.

Behavior Reflects Belief

Our behavior is often a reflection of our beliefs about who we are. It is usually consistent with what we think to be true about ourselves (Prov. 23.7). If we base our worth solidly on the truths of God’s Word, then our behavior will often reflect His love, grace, and power. But if we base our worth on our abilities or the fickle approval of others, then our behavior will reflect the insecurity, fear, and anger that comes from such instability.
